Japan’s PM urges continued dialogue with China despite tensions
Speaking at her first press conference of the new year, Takaichi stressed that “Our nation is open to various opportunities for dialogue with China and has never closed the door,” as stated by reports. She highlighted that dialogue is key to resolving misunderstandings and maintaining stable relations.
The remarks follow a notice from China’s Embassy in Japan issued Saturday, warning that public security conditions in some parts of Japan have worsened and advising Chinese citizens to avoid traveling to the country for the time being. Japanese authorities have not yet issued a response to the embassy’s statement.
Tensions have escalated since November 7, when Takaichi commented that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could legally represent a “survival-threatening situation,” potentially allowing Japan to exercise collective self-defense. Her statements sparked strong reactions from Beijing, including travel advisories and renewed restrictions on seafood imports.
