Japan Calls on US to Uphold Trade Commitments

(MENAFN) Japan has urged the United States to honor the terms of their bilateral trade agreement and avoid disadvantaging Tokyo under a new tariff framework, local reports said Tuesday.

Ryosei Akazawa, Japan’s Economy, Trade and Industry Minister, raised the issue during a phone call on Monday with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. The discussion came against the backdrop of a July deal under which Washington agreed to impose a 15% reciprocal tariff on Japanese goods, including automobiles, in return for Tokyo committing $550 billion in US investments. Both sides reportedly reaffirmed their commitment to implement the agreement “swiftly and sincerely.”

The call follows President Donald Trump’s announcement of a new 10% global tariff, which he later indicated could rise to 15%, under a separate legal framework after the US Supreme Court struck down his prior sweeping tariff policy. Akazawa cautioned that Japan could face additional tariff burdens if the higher rate is applied unilaterally, though agricultural exports such as green tea and beef are expected to remain under existing tariff levels.
